I want to share some helpful tips and tools with you — from the areas of yoga, energy work, nutrition, neuroscience and spirituality. You can easily integrate them into your day and create a holistic health routine -to become happier and healthier.

Bye Bye Toxins

How you start the day determines the rest of it.

Coconut pulling and tongue scrapping are a crucial part of my morning routine. Both originate in India and have been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The mouth is considered to mirror the overall health of your whole body, so maintaining oral health is crucial.

Coconut pulling

How to: Before eating or drinking anything, you take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for about 10–15 minutes. It is important that you spit the oil out and do not swallow it, because the oil absorbs all the toxins that are in your mouth.

Benefits: Coconut oil does not only take care of all the toxins accumulated in your mouth, but it also reduces harmful bacteria on your teeth. It helps against inflammation, fights plaque and cleans stains on teeth — so if you want a whiter smile, try coconut pulling! In Ayurvedic medicine, the tongue is connected to various organs and stores toxic heavy metals. Oil pulling activates salivary enzymes which absorb toxins such as chemical toxins, bacterial toxins and environmental toxins from the blood and remove them from your body through the tongue.

Tongue Scraping

How to: Use a metal string, spoon or the back of the toothbrush (Indians use their nails) and brush over your tongue, taking off the layer that accumulated during the night.

Benefits: The tongue collects toxins and bacteria, that is why especially in the morning you find yourself with a white layer of toxins from bad digestion, imbalance of the gastrointestinal system or unhealthy eating habits — by scrapping you remove these toxins directly. It is beneficial to do a tongue examination before you scrap — because a coated tongue means you are accumulating toxins, which means you should be more aware of your nutrition.

The ancient medicine of Ayurveda claims that tongue scrapping also helps you to taste better! By scrapping you stimulate your inner organs because your tongue is energetically connected to them — so it is like an internal massage! Ayurveda also says that by cleaning your tongue, you clean your mind.

Start Your Digestion Right

Something that should not be missing before breakfast: my personal power tea made of turmeric, ginger, black pepper and lemon. Here are the reasons this combination is especially powerful:

Turmeric

Home in Southeast Asia, turmeric is the little sister of ginger and offers countless healing properties. It is considered a powerful antioxidant that is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial & antiviral. It is said to help with diabetes, rheumatism, skin conditions, depression, allergies and to support the brain and nervous system. For these reasons turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, to fight infections on open wounds and to protect the digestive tract. Turmeric also helps you to strengthen the immune system due to its cleansing energy.

Black Pepper

The active ingredient of turmeric is called curcumin. The only problem with curcumin is that our body cannot absorb even a tiny bit of this component. Here is when black pepper enters the game. Its main active ingredient is piperine, which helps your body to absorb 2000% more curcumin. Black pepper has similar effects like turmeric. This powerful combination doesn’t only helps with digestion and inflammation, it is also used as a natural pain killer.

Ginger

Now if you combine this powerful root with its sibling ginger, you will feel unbeatable. Ginger belongs to the same family as turmeric and offers similar benefits. As a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it helps to regulate blood sugar levels and fights infections. Additionally, the root helps to treat nausea and symptoms of the flu. According to Ayurveda, one of its greatest superpowers is that it strengthens the digestive system. In Ayurvedic medicine, they even recommend eating fresh ginger before every meal to help you digest.

Lemon

The last ingredient is the allrounder lemon. Lemon helps to maintain the ph level of the body and jumpstarts your digestion. Besides, it is an excellent source of vitamin c.

Movement is Key

Fact is, you can put all the healthy stuff you want in your body, but that is only half of the truth of how to stay healthy. Personally, I do not feel like myself without movement — it gives me energy and brings me into a good mood.

These 3 tools that will do the same for you:

Energy Work

I start my day off with some energy work, to build my immune system, release pain, gain energy and clear my mind. Energy work is a combination of stretching, pulling, pushing and acupressure to get that energy flowing! It is super easy to do and only takes ca 7 minutes. Yoga

I have been practising yoga for more than 3 years, every single day — even if it is just a little bit. And I consider my time on the matt as sacred, more as a ritual than a morning exerciseAfter I prepare my power drink I set the space, lighting a candle and burning some incense, accompanied by soft music. The yoga practice of different for everyone, and I too change it up according to how I feel. Usually, I combine meditation and stretching, becoming more aware of my breath & body. It really helps me with moods, negative thoughts and physical issues like sore muscles or digestion problems.

I am especially fond of kundalini yoga because it works a lot with your breath and helps to activate those dormant energies. A tool that kundalini yoga uses as well is “shaking it off”, one of my favourite exercises. You just stand up and start shaking all your body, as much as you can for a minimum of 5 minutes. It is not only an effective workout (you even work muscles you didn’t know exist), it also enhances the blood flow, helps with stress and tense muscles and it is a lot of fun!

After the shaking, I usually raise my arms into the sky and smile. Neuroscience says doing this for 1–2 minutes every day activates a reaction in your brain that “everything is ok”, it slows down the heart rate and a lot of endorphins are released — this makes you feel happy & less stressed! As the Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh said

“Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.”

So try smiling even if you don’t feel like it — it will still work. And when I then come off the matt, I am another human being, feeling more alive, happy and connected.

Dancing

In my opinion, the best way to start any day is with your favourite musicWhen I go to take a shower and get ready in the bathroom, when I prepare my breakfast or sometimes even on my way to work, I dance.

The best way to dance is free without restrictions or ideas — because everyone can dance!

Dancing has so many benefits — it lifts your mood, energizes your body and improves your brain function. You can include dance into almost every task: cooking, cleaning, playing with your cats … and because you don’t dance silently, you can put on your favourite tunes! Good Music is proven to stimulate your brain in different ways, depending on the genre it can motivate you, help you to relax or to focus, it can help you to express emotions or get that energy flowing. But be careful what you listen to — because the genre & lyrics you choose have a deep effect on your subconsciousness.
